BREAKING NEWS

cj Sez: Coming soon! After a five-year novel writing dearth, I have a new book coming out. (I’ve been writing short stories for anthologies in the interim.)

A TIME TO DIE is a Southern, mystery/romance novella with a Stephanie Plum-style protagonist.

I’m still putting the finishing touches on the publication requirements and waiting for a proof copy. Watch this space and my Facebook page for news about the launch date. I love this story and hope you will, too.

Next on my to-do list are the promotions and setting up an author landing page. The landing page website is a maybe, however. I am not particularly techno inclined. If you have any suggestions about an easy way to accomplish that, please let me know.

§§

Writers:

It’s officially tax season, so I thought this information from Kaye George (National Best-Selling & Agatha-Nominated mystery author) might be of interest for our fellow authors.

Kaye George says:

“I HOPE you all know that you should ALL be deducting your writing expenses on a Schedule C, no matter whether or not you're published, no matter whether or not you're making or losing money! There are MANY CPAs who do not know that writing is NEVER considered a hobby, as long as you are seriously trying to get published. The hobby rule does NOT apply to authors.

You can refer to my last yearly tax related blog post, from ‘Travels with Kaye,’ that I used to do. https://travelswithkaye.blogspot.com/2022/01/

Show this is your CPA or tax preparer if they need to see it.”

Plotting assist

From the archives: Back in 2020, Lyrical Pens quoted the following David Mamet thoughts on plotting. Since then, the wise words have made their way into and out of a lot of other mouths, including YouTubers. Still good info, whomever you choose to cite.

“When you’re plotting . . . if you replace the W in what, when, and where with T, you have the answer to all those questions.”

Readers:

Mardi Gras is celebrated on February 17 this year. Otherwise known as Fat Tuesday, it’s the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.

Put the following books on your buy/to-be-read list to help you join in Mobile, Alabama’s festivities.

MARDI GRAS PIECES

Tis Mardi Gras Season, so grab this book while the grabbing’s good and learn more about Mobile, Alabama’s authentic connection to Mardi Gras.

Everyone from Mobile, Alabama, has a Mardi Gras story. In this second installment of the Mobile Writers Guild PIECES anthology series, the guild members share their stories—some true and some fictional, some funny, some touching, and some downright chilling.

To-be-read and well-chosen details

cj Sez:  The next story I plan to read from my to-be-read eBook list is THE DARKLING, a horror novel from Carolyn Haines---that is, after I finish a re-read of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD for a Facebook group discussion.

I am not, however, a fast reader. The abundance of scarring and floaters in my eyes (from a previous surgery and aging) breaks up the words when I try to read a book. Working on my computer has also suffered, until a friend recommended that I use a dark page background with white letters when I write. That’s working better. Not perfect, but better.

There are so many readers posting on Facebook who exclaim about their favorite authors and series and have shelves and shelves of books waiting to be read, I’m in awe. Are you one of those avid readers?
§§

Do you have an opinion about showing versus telling, for or against? Silly question. I think all authors will declare pro, con, or not always on the subject. Not always appears to be the majority. I’m pro but can’t always achieve it because it’s hard. It takes visualization, remembering, and some poetic phrasing. I think of “showing” as writing from a deep point of view, which I love to read.

A white-haired, wrinkled, old woman, you say? How about this example of showing, not telling—excerpted from “One Well-Chosen Detail: Write Juicy Descriptions Without Overwhelming Your Reader,” a November 15, 2023, post on Jane Friedman’s website by author and writing coach April Dávila (@aprildavila)

“… in the last years she continued to settle and began to shrink. Her mouth bowed forward and her brow sloped back, and her skull shone pink and speckled within a mere haze of hair, which hovered about her head like the remembered shape of an altered thing. She looked as if the nimbus of humanity were fading away and she were turning monkey. Tendrils grew from her eyebrows and coarse white hairs sprouted on her lip and chin.  ///”

Things to think about: If you replace “W” with “T” in What, Where, and When, you get the answer to each of them.

If you’re in the Mobile, AL, area, you’re in great luck. The (FREE) Mobile Literary Festival returns after its pandemic hiatus. WRITE NOW comes  to the Ben May Main Library on Saturday, March 11, 2023.

Great topics, excellent faculty, shopping and networking breaks, longer lunch break.

Which workshop piques your interest? I’ll be part of the work crew, but hope to break out a bit of time to listen to the pros and cons of “Pantster v. Plotter: The Great Debate."

The plot vs. pants session will be an in-depth look at the strengths and weaknesses in the process of heavily outlining the work (plotting, story boarding, etc.) versus writing the first words of a project without any idea of what the outcome will be (writing by the seat of your pants.) Of course there are a ton of ways to approach a writing project, so the Festival invited three different authors—Carrie Dalby (Possession Chronicles series), Amy Delcambre (Secret Mobile, A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure), and Amanda Gibson (In the Absence of Serpents)—to share their insights on the pros and cons of their preferred process. Ought to be a very interesting workshop, since I consider myself a “pathfinder.”

What inspires me to write (when I want to quit)

cj Sez: Seasons’ greetings . . .

§§

The following pieces of info keep me writing:

James Lee Burke was born in 1936. (I’m not that old, but it tells me I don’t have to be a twenty- or thirty-something to succeed. Okay, okay, so I should have started earlier.)  In the back of Burke’s novel, Wayfaring Stranger, on the “About the Author” page, I found this:

“His novel, The Lost Get-Back Boogie, was rejected 111 times over a period of nine years and, upon its publication by Louisiana State University Press, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.”

And this from author Chris Bradford: “There is no failure except in no longer trying.”  (cj Sez: That's a big guilt trip.)

You get the idea, and it’s my motto: Keep on Keeping on.

There many things that inspire me to keep writing: My family, my friends, memories of places I've seen, writers conferences, and wonderful writing groups to which I belong. Each member brings a special writing/reading strength to the process of writing, and I've benefited immensely from their contributions.

It can be hard to find a compatible critique group of writers knowledgeable in the genre in which you write, but I highly recommend trying. The input can be invaluable and the camaraderie priceless.

Need a reason to make your writing the best it can be?

“Nobody reads a mystery to get to the middle. They read it to get to the end. If it’s a letdown, they won’t buy anymore. The first page sells that book. The last page sells your next book.”

                                       ~Mickey Spillane

§§

For writers and readers

Style question: I was once asked this question: “If you've published a novel, could you tell me whether or not the internal dialogue is italicized?”

My answer: I’ve seen it in print both ways. When you self-publish, the choice is pretty much yours. However, the rule there is, be consistent throughout the book. When you have an editor and a publisher, the choice is not yours.

√  A recent Jane Friedman article also addresses that question, and there’s something about stand your ground that appeals to me, sometimes  . . . https://www.janefriedman.com/ask-the-editor-when-to-defer/

√  Coming Attraction ... Coming to Lyrical Pens next week!
International author Judy Penz Sheluk stops by to give some insights into her writing.

(Judy is the bestselling author of two mystery series: The Glass Dolphin Mysteries and the Marketville Mysteries.)

§§

That’s it for today’s post. You-all guys keep on keeping on, and I’ll try to do the same. Raising prayers for your health and safety.

P.S. Right now, I’m sitting in front of my computer listening to the band at the high school behind my back yard playing “Monster Mash” for their Halloween Party. I am reminded of one of my favorite family Halloween stories: When my grandson was born, the nickname his father, my son, chose for me (before I put a screeching halt to it) was “Grampire” and that was the sign on the baby's stroller at the airport when I came for a visit on Thanksgiving.

Celebrate! Spring is springing today.

cj Sez: Today, March 20, 2022, at 11:33 CST, the vernal equinox marks the start of spring in the northern hemisphere.

Now for a little scientific info … During the equinox, the sun passes directly above the equator and brings about twelve hours of daylight and twelve hours of night (i.e. “equinox”).

In the northern hemisphere, the March equinox comes with warmer weather and budding flowers. In the southern hemisphere, it brings the beginning of fall.

Aspiring crime and mystery writers take note: Writers’ organizations are wonderful sources for learning the craft of writing, publishing, and networking. I’m a member of Mobile Writers Guild, Alabama Writers’ Forum, Alabama Writers’ Cooperative, as well as the international organization Sisters in Crime and their online group, Guppies.

In addition to a couple of creative writing courses in a college setting, each of those organizations has been important to achieving my goal to become a published author. When I have a question, someone has the answer I need.

All of the organizations are comprised of published and non-published writers, hailing from a variety of professions and bringing with them a wealth of expertise.

“Sisters in Crime is an absolute necessity for anyone stepping into the crime writing world, and a continuing joy as our careers unfold.” - Hank Phillippi Ryan, USA Today bestselling author, five-time Agatha winner, and Sisters in Crime past president.

Some members are judges, doctors, private investigators, law enforcement officers, and there’s even a government agent or two. The feedback from these people is informative, super supportive, and on the money.

I’ll mention the world-wide group Guppies, specifically, because they have a large list of specialized subgroups (for agent searches, querying, critiquing, manuscript swaps, et al.), and, like Sisters-in-Crime, they also offer a variety of on-line skill-building classes.

If you haven’t joined a writers’ organization, you should think about doing that.

Here’s a two-fer: Support a good cause and get treated to some wonderful and touching short stories. Harbor Humane Society's THE BIG FANG anthology is tentatively scheduled for release in April. This anthology has short stories from 22 different authors—stories full of mystery, murder, love, humor and more; and always involve an animal of some shape or form.

My latest cozy mystery, "Firebug," is included in the charity anthology, and the short story features a Beagle-Golden Retriever-mix puppy named Harley.

THE BIG FANG will be available for purchase on Amazon and in person at the shelter and our Harbor Humane Resale Store with all proceeds returning to Harbor Humane to support their animal rescue work.

Why that particular book?

cj Sez: Rummaging through my LP archives for inspiration, I found a reader questionnaire (from another writer’s blog) and thought what a great idea. So, here is some Q&A for you to think about.

Photo by The Haunted Book Shop

Q. What makes you want to buy a book –the cover? ... Or is it the blurb on the back of the book?

A. For me, it's both. The cover grabs my attention, then the blurb has to invite me to open the book . . . make me want to know more about the story.

Q. When you get into a story, what keeps you reading? Is it the bad boy hero or the tough, strong-willed woman or the cast of characters that help push the story forward?

A. First, I will not read for a long time to “get into a story.” It has to hook my interest early, certainly no later than the first chapter. Then whether hero or heroine, I want to find some action and a plot. I also like to find humor and some quick repartee in even the darkest of moments. When my heroine is about to go where she’s shouldn’t go or has never been before, I want the scene to be scary, yet inviting me along for the adventure at the same time.

Q. What makes you like one author more than another?

A. I’ll admit to being a wordsmith, but I also “write tight” … which means I’m not into graphorrhea*.

 *    graphorrhea \ı graf-ә- rē-ә \ n : mental disorder marked by the writing of a long succession of meaningless words.
“A novel of such great length and of so little worth could only have been written by someone caught in the grip of graphorrhea.”

I want to be enchanted by the author’s voice…how she/he uses a few precise words and syntax to evoke some “show me” visualization and/or visceral emotion.

Q. If you’re into reading a series, when do you get tired of it…or do you?

A. As long as the author keeps the storyline and characters fresh, I don’t have a problem with continuing to read a series ad infinitum. It’s when the storyline get stale and takes the same direction over and over that I’m no longer interested in reading the next book, and I’m on to the next author. A stale storyline can also happen in stand-alone books when the author gets stuck on the same formulaic style/theme.

Q. And how about reviews: Do you take a few minutes to write a review?

A. Without readers, authors have no audience, and without an audience, authors are out of a job. Whether on Amazon, Facebook, Goodreads, etc., constructive feedback is what keeps us going. We want to know our strengths as well as our weaknesses. We’re polite—we say please and thank you.

Lyrical Pens would love to know your answers to these questions. So leave a comment, already.

Which would you rather do first…read the book or see the movie?

cj Sez:  Here are two authors who have both formats for you. In case you don’t remember, on Oct 3, I posted a Lyrical Pens 4+star review of #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner’s novel BEFORE SHE DISAPPEARED.

The novel is peopled with flesh-and-blood characters you want to love, want to hate, and want to win. And her settings? You will know where you are, and you will fear who lurks in the shadows.

Seems some movie folk liked it, too. From a press release:
