Dog Days and Sisters in Crime contest

cj Sez: The “Dog Days of Summer” are officially upon us, as is Hurricane Season along the Gulf coast.

To say the weather is sweltering would be an understatement. Today’s heat index where I live reached triple digitssomething like 110°. Needless to say, I’m sucking down water and planning my days to be indoors between ten a.m. and five p.m.

The dog days of summer are historically the period following the heliacal (sunrise) of the star Dog Star, Sirius. Sirius is one star in a group of stars that form the constellation Canis Major, meaning “Greater Dog.”

Greek and Roman astrology connected Sirius to heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck.

The Farmer’s Almanac says, “the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11” are the traditional timing of the Dog Days. It also says that “some of our hottest and most humid days happen after August 11.” Seems there’s a lot more hellacious heat and humidity to come, so we have that going for us.

The 2024 hurricane season has already spun up two storms. The first, tropical storm Alberto, doused the coast of Texas and now the first hurricane, Beryl, is also barreling toward the Texas Gulf Coast.

Do what you have to do to stay safe out there, friends.

Deadlines and rabbit holes

cj Sez:  I wish I had a bit of Elmore Leonard’s discipline for sitting down and going about the business of writing. What started as necessity for him turned into habit when he became an established author.

Recognize anyone?

“To support his family, he worked as a copywriter at an ad agency, where he developed his aversion to adverbs, and also his knack for brief, punched-up prose. He began a habit of waking at five a.m. and immediately starting to write -- not even putting the water on for coffee until he had something down on paper -- then going to work at the office, first in advertising and later writing educational films for the Encyclopedia Britannica.” (Source: http://www.biographile.com/a-capital-crime-elmore-leonard-deserves-a-definitive-biography/22523/ )

It used to be that I worked better when I had to crash for a short-term deadline. So I thought if I gave myself a deadline, I’d have the incentive to keep writing. Found out that’s not true because somehow I seem to know the deadline is self-imposed. (As if.) I manage to bury my deadline under weeks of procrastination that I call “research.” (Leonard paid others to do his research.) It seems that the more research I do—I learn really fascinating things—the less creativity I have.

However, I’m not giving up on my current work in progress. Last night I made a note or two when I went to bed . . . I get a lot of good ideas just before I fall asleep. That’s why I keep paper and pencil on the table next to the bed.

I don’t sit in front of this computer very long on Sundays but I’ll start writing on Monday … right after I feed all the critters, including me, do some weeding or picking up pine cones and deadfall, do a bit of housecleaning, and by then it’s time to watch the news at 5, 6, and 6:30. After I make supper and do the dishes, I’ll put BIC in front of the computer. But I promise you I won’t make any deep dives down research rabbit holes. (I need to promise you because if I promise myself, I’ll find something irrelevant to do.)

How about you? When do you get your best ideas? How do you conquer the blank page in front of you? How do you stay out of the research rabbit holes? I really need some help.

The international writing organization Sisters in Crime (of which I am a member) announced their Eleanor Taylor Bland Emerging Crime Writer of Color Award Recipient:

“We'd like to congratulate Shizuka Otake of Jackson Heights, NY on being named the 2022 Eleanor Taylor Bland Emerging Crime Writers of Color Award Winner! Her submission, Murder in Tokyo, is a story of a Japanese American teen’s life which is shattered when her boyfriend is arrested as the prime suspect in a classmate’s murder. “I lived in Tokyo as an adult and found it painful to be viewed as different,” said Otake. “I expected to fit in and wondered how much harder that experience would have been if I was a vulnerable teen.”

Otake’s story was selected from more than fifty submissions

Celebrate! Spring is springing today.

cj Sez: Today, March 20, 2022, at 11:33 CST, the vernal equinox marks the start of spring in the northern hemisphere.

Now for a little scientific info … During the equinox, the sun passes directly above the equator and brings about twelve hours of daylight and twelve hours of night (i.e. “equinox”).

In the northern hemisphere, the March equinox comes with warmer weather and budding flowers. In the southern hemisphere, it brings the beginning of fall.

Aspiring crime and mystery writers take note: Writers’ organizations are wonderful sources for learning the craft of writing, publishing, and networking. I’m a member of Mobile Writers Guild, Alabama Writers’ Forum, Alabama Writers’ Cooperative, as well as the international organization Sisters in Crime and their online group, Guppies.

In addition to a couple of creative writing courses in a college setting, each of those organizations has been important to achieving my goal to become a published author. When I have a question, someone has the answer I need.

All of the organizations are comprised of published and non-published writers, hailing from a variety of professions and bringing with them a wealth of expertise.

“Sisters in Crime is an absolute necessity for anyone stepping into the crime writing world, and a continuing joy as our careers unfold.” - Hank Phillippi Ryan, USA Today bestselling author, five-time Agatha winner, and Sisters in Crime past president.

Some members are judges, doctors, private investigators, law enforcement officers, and there’s even a government agent or two. The feedback from these people is informative, super supportive, and on the money.

I’ll mention the world-wide group Guppies, specifically, because they have a large list of specialized subgroups (for agent searches, querying, critiquing, manuscript swaps, et al.), and, like Sisters-in-Crime, they also offer a variety of on-line skill-building classes.

If you haven’t joined a writers’ organization, you should think about doing that.

Etcetera.

Here’s a two-fer: Support a good cause and get treated to some wonderful and touching short stories. Harbor Humane Society's THE BIG FANG anthology is tentatively scheduled for release in April. This anthology has short stories from 22 different authors—stories full of mystery, murder, love, humor and more; and always involve an animal of some shape or form.

My latest cozy mystery, "Firebug," is included in the charity anthology, and the short story features a Beagle-Golden Retriever-mix puppy named Harley.

THE BIG FANG will be available for purchase on Amazon and in person at the shelter and our Harbor Humane Resale Store with all proceeds returning to Harbor Humane to support their animal rescue work.

Watch for it

Happy Halloween and welcome to November

cj Sez: Monsters Got Talent, and they are celebrating Halloween at OWA—for those readers not familiar with OWA, it’s the amusement theme park operated the Poarch Band of Creek Indians in Foley, Alabama. The picture below is of monster/werewolf grandson Jeff singing to the crowd and “having a blast.”

The history of Halloween from various computer searches

Halloween or Hallowe’en, a contraction of Hallowed Eve, is also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve) and is observed in many countries on October 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. The tradition originated with the pagan Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced SOW-in) when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. From present-day Ireland to the United Kingdom to Brittany, France, the ancient Celts marked this as one of their four most important festival days of the year.

And a little background about my short story in the HALLOWEEN PIECES anthology:

If a month happens to have two full moons, the second full moon is called a blue moon,” and that happens on Halloween/Samhain once about every nineteen years.

My short story, “Once in a Blue Moon,” is a fantasy mystery so named because Samhain fell on such a rare event in 2020.

The story takes modern-day Katherine Johnson into a mysterious village where she’s caught in an ancient celebration from which she might never return.

Halloween is the theme but everything in the anthology is an enjoyable read for any season. As of the time of this post, HALLOWEEN PIECES is free on Kindle Unlimited and $1.99 to buy for your own library.   Buy Halloween Pieces Now

Do you know the difference between ellipsis and ellipses? From Fiction University comes this post on How to Use an Ellipsis in Writing (Without Overusing It)

"In Latin and Greek, “ellipsis” means to fall short or leave out — an omission. At its core, that’s exactly how it’s used in grammar, to indicate words have been omitted or left out.”

*Excerpts from a report by Alex Newton at K-Lytics

“Let's talk about an emerging genre of its own,
Paranormal Women's Fiction or PWF. It features powerful heroines kicking their midlife problems to hell with sass, magic, mystery, and adventure.

Think of movies like The Witches of Eastwick or Practical Magic, and you got it.

You can find the occasional PWF title on Kindle published as early as 2011. But about a year ago, some experienced authors from genres such as paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and cozy mystery decided to define a dedicated place (i.e., a genre) for PWF books and differentiate them from other genres.
/ / /

“The evolution of PWF underscores the continued rise in popularity of women's fiction. But not only that. It proves what indie publishers can achieve in no time, thanks to their innovation, agility, hard work, and persistence.

Could PWF be something for your writing or inspire you to develop your own genre-defining ideas?  Check out this new K-lytics research report!"
