Groundhog Day

Today, Punxsutawney Phil and Potomac Phil both predicted six more weeks of winter. My questions are: What has that got to do with Mobile, AL, and who is Potomac Phil?

Answer #1: The prediction of six more weeks of winter has pretty much nothing to do with Mobile, AL. Mobile area colleges started outdoor baseball practice weeks ago and the first regularly scheduled game is next week--I think that says Southern Spring is Sprung.

Answer #2: Potomac Phil is (was) a groundhog who paid a visit to the taxidermist before he also is said to have seen his shadow at Dupont Circle in Washington, DC. However, not only did Potomac Phil predict more winter, he more accurately predicted nine more months of Congressional gridlock and that corresponds to lasting until election day. I think that fits.

Reality check: Thursday's weather forecast for DC calls for temperatures to continue in the mid 50's, through Sunday, and Michigan's own Woody the Woodchuck predicted an early spring. So much for six more weeks of winter.

Mahala and I are heading out to the Breeze Hill writer's retreat tomorrow. It's a one-day small-group affair and we're looking forward to some tidbits that could help us get our work published.

You-all guys keep on keeping on, and I'll try to do the same.
